FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Belarus Ambassador HE Sergei Aleinik
Nominated for Economic Development
London, UK – March 5, 2015 – His Excellency Sergei Aleinik of Belarus has been shortlisted from over 100 candidates this year for the 3rd Annual Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. The award recognises outstanding politicians and diplomats who are representing civilian interests at the highest level in areas of policy, social and business overall. Mr Aleinik is nominated for Economic Development.
Economics is a big focus for Belarus but Mr Aleinik stresses that “Financial link is a clear link to human development”. A young country that burdened with the continuing and substantial decontamination and health care costs of the Chernobyl accident, the Belarusian Ambassador has a strong stance against nuclear and chemical weapons, a strong desire to develop the need for good infrastructure.
Despite the world’s financial crisis, Belarus’ trade with the UK has only become stronger. With over 270 British companies now based in Belarus, Mr Aleinik has been working closely with the European partners to diversify trade, investment and economic cooperation. In 2014, the embassy had organisation a big investment forum at the Institute of Directors with a focus on financial institutions, hi-tech companies, and textiles industries, and continues to build relations with various Chambers of Commerce, the London Stock Exchange, European banks, and financial institutions in improving business development.
In addition to strengthening business contacts, Mr Aleinik has been growing educational links between the UK and Belarus, using Britain as a hub for business education. The Ambassador has created good links between British and Belarusian universities with attention to exchange of learning between students.
Mr Aleinik is proud of the important initiatives which Belarus’ UN membership has marked in the past few years. Some of this includes the recognition of the diverse means of progressive development, the establishment of a Global Partnership against Slavery and Human Trafficking, the addressing of energy-related issues, and the increased role of mid-income countries in sustainable development.
Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, Executive Director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: “All too often, we hear stories of our governments not representing our needs but Grassroot Diplomat looks upon selfless individuals who work tirelessly for their communities. The award seeks to create a culture of positive role models within our governments which encourages others in power to follow suit.”
In addition to being the Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Mr Aleinik also serves as Ambassador to the Holy See and the Sovereign Order of Malta.
