London, UK – March 5, 2015 – His Excellency Dato’ Ahmad Rasidi Hazizi of Malaysia has been shortlisted from over 100 candidates this year for the 3rd Annual Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. The award recognises outstanding politicians and diplomats who are representing civilian interests at the highest level in areas of policy, social and business overall. Mr Hazizi is nominated for Brand Malaysia.

Early on in his career, Mr Hazizi has had a strong focus on bringing business focus on Malaysia. In his first Ambassadorial posting in Laos, he became an ‘Ambassador Contractor’ to see through the completion of a five-star hotel led by a Malaysian company. He also oversaw Malaysia’s involvement in the World Islamic Economic Forum in November 2011 pushing forward Malaysian trade and tourism. In his current posting, Mr Hazizi is adamant to see projects and products by Malaysia be prominently branded in the UK.

As he aptly notes, an average citizen would easily recognise Honda to be a Japanese brand, yet unable to distinguish famous brands like Jimmy Choo, San Francisco Coffee and Bufori to be products of Malaysia. Malaysia has large investments in hotels and properties in the United Kingdom, second to the United States yet it is little known that Queen’s Park Ranger Football Club and the £8 billion investment of Battersea Power Station is Malaysian-owned. Three Malaysian companies, namely SP Setia Berhad, Sime Darby Berhad and Employee Provident Fund, won the tender to build the Battersea Power Station Project, creating 3,500 homes and 15,000 job opportunities. An achievement in its own right, Mr Hazizi understands the relevance of bringing Malaysian to the forefront particularly in strengthening relations from a top-down approach. Therefore, as part of his mission to Brand Malaysia, Mr Hazizi is working personally with hotel proprietors and business contacts to inject Malaysian culture and patriotism back into Malaysian projects that currently exist in the UK.

The Ambassador said, “Malaysian culture somehow does not encourage you to push and promote yourself in a way that you appear to be arrogant. We must learn to sell ourselves politely and celebrate our achievements!”

To this end, Mr Hazizi connects himself closely with the 70,000 Malaysian Diaspora who are working, living and studying in Britain, describing himself as the “father to students”. Engagement with students in particularly will encourage Malaysians to go back and work, keeping close ties to their country and helping it grow economically.

Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, Executive Director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: “All too often, we hear stories of our governments not representing our needs but Grassroot Diplomat looks upon selfless individuals who work tirelessly for their communities. The award seeks to create a culture of positive role models within our governments which encourages others in power to follow suit.”

Join HE Dato’ Ahmad Rasidi Hazizi and other government nominees for the gala dinner at The May Fair Hotel, London on Thursday 5th March 2015. For ticket information please visit: http://www.grassrootdiplomat.org/book-tickets or call 07511 816689.
