Embassy of Romania in the UK Nominated for Grassroot Diplomat Award for Supporting Non-Governmental Initiatives
London, UK – April 20, 2016 – The Embassy of Romania to the Court of St James has been shortlisted from over 100 government nominations this year for the 4th Annual Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. The award recognises outstanding politicians and diplomats who are representing civilian interests at the highest level in areas of policy, social and business overall. The Embassy of Romania in the UK have been nominated for their work on the League for Romanian Students Abroad.
Through the introductory initiative of Chargé d’Affaires a.i., Mr Cosmin Onisii, the Romanian embassy has been a long supporter of the League of Romanian Students Abroad (LSRS). The LSRS was established by students in Romania and a UK branch was created in May 2009 to work alongside the embassy and universities in the UK, which has helped to support over 9,000 nationals.
In 2015, the NGO has three major events that is supported by the embassy:
1. An annual conference for students and professors in the UK as an initiative to help integrate Romanian students into the UK.
2. A mentor-membership scheme that helps to build connections between Romanian students and financial or medical professionals working in the UK.
3. Engagement of football games with the Moldovan community as a way to support the diaspora group and raise money for Moldovan children experiencing difficulties at home.
The embassy attended the first Charity Football Challenge versus the Association of Moldavians from the United Kingdom in partnership with Hope and Homes for Children. The LSRS describes itself as an open platform for dialogue and action for Romanian students and graduates as a means contribute to Romania’s development. Solidarity, however, is the main feature of this joint initiative of LSRS, Association of Moldovans in the UK and Hope and Homes for Children, as it serves both the objective of helping those in need and the reinforcing of the historical fraternity between the citizens of Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
In October 2015, the embassy attended a Romanian ball to raise money for education organised by “Teach for Romanian” in collaboration with GRASP and LSRS. The embassy has also been a promoter of LEARN (London Education and Research Network), which aims to help create a framework for diplomatic cooperation in the field of education, to strengthen the dialogue with institutions, organisations and British trainers in education and research areas.
Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, Executive Director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: “All too often, we hear stories of our governments not representing our needs but Grassroot Diplomat looks upon selfless individuals in a position of power, who work tirelessly for their communities. The award seeks to create a culture of positive role models within our governments which encourages others like them to follow suit. Grassroot Diplomat winners go beyond their job descriptions and those shortlisted for the award should be proud to be recognised this far.”
In addition to this, the embassy is very active in career coaching with internships. As of 2015, the embassy has had 35 interns as a measure to encourage a diplomatic career and correcting the image of their country.
