Eritrean Friendship Forum: Strengthening British Ties
Grassroot Diplomat was invited to celebrate the 22nd Independence Anniversary of Eritrea as part of ERI-UK Friendship Forum. The event was held on the 23rd May 2013 at the Hilton Hotel and was a great opportunity to highlight Eritrea Independence alongside its co-operation and development.
Dr Sara Pantuliano, an ODA Senior Researcher gave her reflection upon her involvement in Eritrea’s National Development. She spoke passionately about her experience in Eritrea and of the beauty of Eritrea’s land and people; how Eritrea is a place she and her family visit on many holiday excursions.
On this occasion, Eritrea’s economy was a key topic of interest. Mr Lester Kemp of Bisha Mining gave an insightful presentation into the role of the mining sector on the national economy. His presentation highlighted the natural resources Eritrea holds through its copper and gold deposits as well as the important role the government has in ensuring business adheres to high standards of business practice. Dr Tim Williams of Andiamo Mining gave a further insight into Eritrean future mining prospects and the inter-relationship the mining sector and the Eritrean government have in facilitating the economic growth for Eritrea.
HE Tesfamicael Gerahtu, the Ambassador of the State of Eritrea to the Court of St James also gave his speech highlighting this significant moment in Eritrea’s Independence and thanking guests in coming together to celebrate this 22nd Independence Day. His inspiring speech informed attendees of Eritrea’s state of the economy, investment opportunities, developmental progress in line and even ahead of the Millennium Development Goals as well as the sensitive case of UN Sanctions imposed on Eritrea and the illegal Ethiopian occupation of Eritrean territories.
Supporters of the event included diplomats, investors, Eritrean-British citizens as well as various British institutions. This was a joyous occasion to which Grassroot Diplomat was proud to be a part of, and as ever, we graciously thank the Eritrean Ambassador and the embassy for their generous hospitality.
