HE Khaled Al-Duwaisan Shortlisted for Counter Terrorism Initiative
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
London, UK – March 5, 2015 – His Excellency Khaled Al-Duwaisan, Ambassador of Kuwait has been shortlisted from over 100 candidates this year for the 3rd Annual Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. The award recognises outstanding politicians and diplomats who are representing civilian interests at the highest level in areas of policy, social and business overall. Mr Al-Duwaisan is nominated for his work on fighting against religious extremism.
The longest serving ambassador in London, Mr Al-Duwaisan has lived a life of extremes, seeing his country become invaded by Kuwait in the 90s. Since then, Mr Al-Duwaisan has since been made Dean of the Diplomatic corps in April 2003 with 80 per cent of his time given to receiving officials from 185 embassies in London and attending official functions in the diplomatic community. For the Ambassador, it is very important to act as a role model for other diplomats to be tolerant and respectful and his work in fighting against extremism continues through his ongoing engagement with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Muslim communities in the United Kingdom.
Mr Al-Duwaisan notes that criminals are hijacking the Islamic religion, making a reference to the Islamic State who are tarnishing the peaceful image and practices of Islam. Changing the method of education is an important tool to doing damage control of the Islamic State. The Kuwaiti Ambassador has therefore been working closely with educational preachers, bringing politicians, scholars, and clergy’s to talk about the real Islam. His engagement has extended to the Arab Council, London’s largest mosque in Regent’s Park, and individuals like Muhammad Abdel-Haleem OBE who is one of the most highly regarded modern translators of the Holy Qu’ran. He is also working with the Arab Council to create one voice for Arab culture and religion, pushing positive images of religious tolerance.
Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, Executive Director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: “All too often, we hear stories of our governments not representing our needs but Grassroot Diplomat looks upon selfless individuals who work tirelessly for their communities. The award seeks to create a culture of positive role models within our governments which encourages others in power to follow suit.”
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the diplomatic community and bilateral and broader relations, Mr Al-Duwaisan has received accolades from Her Majesty The Queen Grand Cross of the Royal Victoria Order (GCVO) in 1995 who became the first Middle Eastern Ambassador to received such honour. Mr Al-Duwaisan is also the accredited Ambassador to Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
