London, UK – April 20, 2016 – His Excellency Roy Warren Blackbeard, High Commissioner of Botswana to the Court of St James, has been shortlisted from over 100 government nominations this year for the 4th Annual Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. The award recognises outstanding politicians and diplomats who are representing civilian interests at the highest level in areas of policy, social and business overall. Mr Blackbeard is nominated for his longstanding service to the Diplomatic Corps in the UK.
Mr Blackbeard is the second longest serving Ambassador in the UK, where he was appointed in 1998. He is also the Dean of the African Union Heads of Mission and the Commonwealth.
As one of the leading diplomats in the country, the main challenges for Mr Blackbeard has been in meeting all the commitments that come along working within the Diplomatic Corps within and outside of the UK. As the Chair of the African Union, he has put forward great effort in creating projects with Africa and the Diplomatic Corps, particularly in the improvement of African debts and development of investment with the British government. He is also responsible for coordinating ministerial activities and meetings across various countries.
In London, Mr Blackbeard tries to facilitate access to people to newcomers, particularly in assisting upcoming and new Heads of Missions to current diplomats. He also uses his contact to leverage new projects and investment proposals, forging linked between governments and diplomatic communities for the last 10-15 years.
Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, Executive Director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: “All too often, we hear stories of our governments not representing our needs but Grassroot Diplomat looks upon selfless individuals in a position of power, who work tirelessly for their communities. The award seeks to create a culture of positive role models within our governments which encourages others like them to follow suit. Grassroot Diplomat winners go beyond their job descriptions and those shortlisted for the award should be proud to be recognised this far.”
