Austrian Ambassador HE Dr Martin Eichtinger Nominated for Grassroot Diplomat Award for Non-Government Interactions
London, UK – April 20, 2016 – His Excellency Dr Martin Eichtinger, Ambassador of Austria to the Court of St Jame’s, has been shortlisted from over 100 government nominations this year for the 4th Annual Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. The award recognises outstanding politicians and diplomats who are representing civilian interests at the highest level in areas of policy, social and business overall. Dr Eichtinger is nominated for varied cultural work in the non-government environment.
The Ambassador has focused much of his work around culture and interacting with non-government organisations within this area.
His Excellency was responsible for an exhibition marking 70 years of United Nations, and 60 years of Austria’s membership into the UN. Vienna has been a hub for internationals organisations and has now frequently been the venue for peace negotiations. In 2009-2010, Austria was a member of the UN’s Security Council and initiated a resolution on the protection of civilians in armed conflicts and strongly supported the protection of journalists.
Dr Eichtinger worked closely with the Lord Mayor of Westminster on last Silver Sunday, when retired Austrians living in London were invited to a special function at the Austrian Ambassador’s Residence in the presence of the Lord Mayor. He has also hosted functions at the Embassy to meet with Jewish refugees who had to flee Austria between 1938 and 1945.
As a lover of classic music, the Ambassador has started a regular Vienna Concert Series at his Residence. He works with the City Music Foundation in hosting a concert by the Foundation’s artists, thereby helping to equip exceptional musicians with the skills and networks they need to build their careers.
Already in his previous position as Director General for Culture at the Austrian Foreign Ministry, he supported the EUYO, the European Union Youth Orchestra, which is headquartered in London and has its annual residence at Schloss Grafenegg in Austria. EUYO musicians will also perform at the Austrian Ambassador’s Residence on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Schloss Grafenegg on 4th May 2016.
Another project the Ambassador has been passionately working on is a basketball charity tournament made up of diplomats. Jointly with the Bosnian Ambassador, he first founded a diplomatic team, the “Global Shooting Stars” when he was Ambassador of Austria to Romania. The team, which included four Ambassadors, won an award as being the most diverse team. Now, Ambassador Eichtinger is striving to organise a similar team in the UK and to co-organise a charity tournament in partnership with Greenhouse Sports, a charity which raises funds to allow underprivileged children to do sports and actively compete. The first tournament has been announced for June of this year.
Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, Executive Director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: “All too often, we hear stories of our governments not representing our needs but Grassroot Diplomat looks upon selfless individuals in a position of power, who work tirelessly for their communities. The award seeks to create a culture of positive role models within our governments which encourages others like them to follow suit. Grassroot Diplomat winners go beyond their job descriptions and those shortlisted for the award should be proud to be recognised this far.”
The Ambassador has also initiated presentations to spread the Austrian model of apprenticeships to the UK where young people can learn a craft in professional schools while working in a company of their profession as part of their curriculum. Their apprenticeship leads to a degree as an assistant or master in a certain craft. This dual vocational training is open to young people starting at the age of 14. Many countries have adopted the Austrian vocational training system as a model for their own programmes. Whilst reducing youth unemployment, the scheme enables young people to get special qualifications.
Join HE Dr Martin Eichtinger and other government nominees for the gala dinner at The May Fair Hotel, London on Wednesday 20th April, 2016. For ticket information please visit: http://www.grassrootdiplomat.org/book-tickets or call 07511 816689.
