Mexican Ambassador HE Diego Gomez Pickering Nominated for Grassroot Diplomat Award for Dual Year of Mexico
London, UK – April 20, 2016 – His Excellency Diego Gomez Pickering, Ambassador of Mexico to the Court of St James, has been shortlisted from over 100 government nominations this year for the 4th Annual Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. The award recognises outstanding politicians and diplomats who are representing civilian interests at the highest level in areas of policy, social and business overall. Mr Gomez Pickering has been nominated for the pioneering work of carrying out activities throughout The Dual Year of Mexico in the United Kingdom in 2015.
The ultimate goal for the Mexican embassy is to get a better understanding of the country at grassroots level, and the Dual Year of Mexico was part of this process. The Dual has been a broad-ranging and multisector initiatives aimed at further expanding relations between the governments and societies of Mexico and the UK and battling intolerance through cultural appreciation.
In 2015, the Embassy has been highly successful in covering economic, political, cultural, educational, technological, and touristic matters through the initiative. Over 140 activities were organised throughout the UK including Cornwall, Glasgow, Belfast and Northern Wales and the impact of such events resulted in 1.3 million UK citizens having taken part of heard about the Dual Year through various media sources.
In the economic sphere, the Dual Year has prompted and accelerated growth and commerce, including the doubling of bilateral trade to USD $7 billion (£4.2 billion), as well as surpassing the half a million mark for British visitors travelling to discover Mexico. Politically, the Dual Year reaffirmed the bonds between Britain and Mexico where a State Visit by President Enrique Peña Nieto to the UK saw fourteen agreements signed by the President. Culturally, audiences across the British Isles have been exposed to Mexico’s heritage in the form of widely accessible and popular) food tastings, artistic exchanges, fashion shows, book fairs, and public displays of art. The interest in Mexican products and cuisine has made Mexican culture the second largest consumable in the London area. The Ambassador’s proudest moment in 2015 was the celebration of the “Day of the Dead”, where exhibitions at the British Museum attracted more than 10,000 visitors at the opening day.
In addition to this, the Embassy has managed to gain a 400% increase of UK scholarships for Mexican students as part of its educational outreach during the Dual Year, whereas only 20 scholarships were available back in 2014. Out of 10,000 Mexicans in the UK, 80% of them are now graduates with 100 more scholarships made available through the initiative.
Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, Executive Director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: “All too often, we hear stories of our governments not representing our needs but Grassroot Diplomat looks upon selfless individuals in a position of power, who work tirelessly for their communities. The award seeks to create a culture of positive role models within our governments which encourages others like them to follow suit. Grassroot Diplomat winners go beyond their job descriptions and those shortlisted for the award should be proud to be recognised this far.”
The success of this initiative has set a global policy precedent, paving the way for Dual Years across the world. The next Dual Year will be between Mexico and Germany in 2016 with the ultimate goal of gaining mutual understanding, respect, and discovery between the two nations.
