London, UK – April 20, 2016 – Sukey Cameron MBE, the Falkland Islands Representative within the UK, has been shortlisted from over 100 government nominations this year for the 4th Annual Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. The award recognises outstanding politicians and diplomats who are representing civilian interests at the highest level in areas of policy, social and business overall. Ms Cameron has been nominated for her work ongoing work on promotion of self-determination of the Falkland Islanders.

Ms Cameron has been the Falkland Islands Representative in the UK since June 1990 and has consistently worked in getting the interest of the Islands recognised. Her biggest challenge has been to get the Island portrayed accurately in modern times and developing the ambitions of the Islands to being safe and prosperous.

As a founding member of the UK Overseas Territories Association (UKOTA) and the previous Chair, Ms Cameron has strongly supported the rights of all the 16 British Overseas Territories. Over the years, she has ensured that the Islands were at the forefront of discussions and debate, working closely with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on issues affecting all territories. Her success is measured by the depth of knowledge passed on within Parliament, as well as members of the Diplomatic Corps.

Her role of Chair of UKOTA, which officially represents a grouping of all the UK representatives of the ten inhabited UK OTs, requires a careful balance of interests and viewpoints from the group and their people across the world.

Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, Executive Director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: “All too often, we hear stories of our governments not representing our needs but Grassroot Diplomat looks upon selfless individuals in a position of power, who work tirelessly for their communities. The award seeks to create a culture of positive role models within our governments which encourages others like them to follow suit. Grassroot Diplomat winners go beyond their job descriptions and those shortlisted for the award should be proud to be recognised this far.”

Ms Cameron was educated in the Islands and in the UK, became Executive Secretary of the Falkland Islands Association from 1979-82, and moved to the Falkland Islands Government Office when it was established in 1983 before her 1990 appointed as the Falkland Islands Government’s London Representative.
