Defining Your Life Goals

Goal setting is a powerful process to make you consider your future. In the field of international relations, identifying career priorities can become problematic when your life priorities change. For instance, you may find that once you have started a family, you are less able to take jobs that take you away from home. Or you may need work that pays you more to support your new lifestyle. If you love to travel at this stage of your life, you may find that this may be less doable when you have a family to look after.

Plan for these circumstances now, even if they may seem hypothetical at this stage. Putting ideas to paper and reflecting on them on a regular basis will ensure that your goals remain a priority and are constantly evolving with you and your future self.

Recognising goals that are the highest in importance as early as possible can help you figure out ways to make them happen.

On page 78 of the “Diplomatic Planner” we have provided you with a life grid to complete starting from your immediate goals, all the way through to your 10-year vision and objective. The typical interview questions of “Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years’ time” can now be answered, both on a personal and professional level in various aspect of your life.

Here is an example of how to map out your future priorities against specific goals that will impact you later in life.

Referring to the example, the grid clearly sets out a 10-year progression that is both achievable and aspirational. Therefore, everything you try to do for yourself now may positively impact your future. It is all about planning, then learning to execute your plan.
