“You are a Badass” by Jen Sincero
It isn’t often that you go into diplomacy training to learn about how to live your fullest life, appreciating what you have, and how to really understand yourself before you go into service to others. You won’t be told to be selfish even though much of the job is predominantly to be selfish for the sake of our country and the greater good - whatever that means!
People may have very good reasons as to why they want to join the diplomatic world, or have a noble cause for patriotism or justice. Perhaps the idea sold by the media about the strange and mysterious world of diplomacy was enough to pique your curiosity We all need a reason to do what we do, even though these reasons may not make any sense. Eventually, you will understand more about the world you have chosen to work in because you start to see yourself in a more clearer light. Why not start this process now by picturing yourself in a position of greatness, where you are filled with hope, confidence and positivity.
Before you start to craft your ideal career, your personal brand, understand who you want to help and why, start thinking about the obstacles that will eventually be in your way and how to power through these difficult roadblocks. You will need to have the right mindset to be able to lift boulders and keep focused, even at this early stage of your training.
That is why we recommend the book “You are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life” by Jen Sincero to support Chapter 4 “Know Thyself” for the Diplomatic Planner. This book is highly unconventional on the reading list of international relations and diplomacy, but here at Grassroot Diplomat, we don’t do anything by the books and want to ensure that you go outside of the box when tackling difficult problems.
“You are a Badass” is basically a guide to living life at its fullest with helpful strategies to help you understand what could be holding you back. As a result, the book gears up to breaking bad habits so that you can truly live out your dreams.
What is your ultimate dream when it comes to your career? To be the future UN Secretary-General? To start your own non-government organisation? To run the world’s largest charity in Ethiopia? No matter how big your dream is, think BIG! We encourage you, and make sure that these dreams belong to you and not fashioned up by external influencers. At the end of the day, this is your life and you are the one living it.
In Sincero’s analysis, she reminds us that we often do things that others tell us or what we think we are supposed to do. What you want deep down rarely enters the equation. This has to change. You need to start living for yourself and doing what you love doing. Your negative beliefs are the biggest obstacle between you and your dreams. If you feel that you are an undiscovered genius lost in the daily grind, you need to ask yourself: “What is holding you back?”
What we believe is largely based on the messages with which we have been bombarded since we were young. In Western society, we are constantly hammered by subconscious messages portrayed by the media. As a result, you end up shying away from pursuits that could lead you to success all because you have convinced yourself that there is no point trying.
Sincero says: “Our subconscious mind doesn’t think anything, but it is in control.”
Discover the person you want to be and don’t let anyone tell you to quit. And this isn’t just true of your career. What sort of person do you want to be? How do you want to be portrayed by others? What do you want your children to think of you? What sort of role model will you eventually become to those who look up to you? When we are young, we have an intuitive understanding of who we are and how we do things. But as we grow older, we stop listening to this inner knowledge and do what others tell us to do. Once you stop caring about what other people think, you can find your own path.
Take a step back and observe how you live, what you do and what really interests you. Reflecting in this way will help you discern what you truly want in life. To further boost your thinking power, spend time imagining your goals with as much specificity as possible. Thought is a powerful tool when it comes to achieving your goals, but it must be combined with real action. To act positively, you need to first overcome procrastination and hesitation.
What we really liked about this book is that it really does fire you up in wanting to control the outcome of your life. The advice Sincero shares are very easy to understand whilst also being funny and good natured. If you are feeling down or at a low point in your life, this book is certainly a good pick-me-up.
This book is specifically recommended for Chapter 4 “Know Thyself” of the Diplomatic Planner because many of our clients find this chapter to be one of the hardest. Forget about border control, security issues and immigration for a second. If you’re not comfortable in your own skin and don’t have the strength to be truly be who you are, how will you ever find fulfilment and resist temptations that may jeopardise everything you have ever worked for? You will always be you and you need to comfortable with who you are, and if who you are is not what you want, then you can always change course and see what else is a better fit for you. There is always a choice in what we do and if the choices are difficult to make, there is always our mindset that we can change to help adjust our situation. We need to be able to find that inner knowledge to unlock things that are already within us.
Learn to pinpoint the things in your life that are holding you back, make changes to how you live and think when addressing these roadblocks.
