London, UK – April 20, 2016 – His Excellency Dr Ivan Grdešić of Croatia to the Court of St James, has been shortlisted from over 100 government nominations this year for the 4th Annual Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. The award recognises outstanding politicians and diplomats who are representing civilian interests at the highest level in areas of policy, social and business overall. Mr Grdešić has been nominated for his work on showcasing the culture and talent of Croatia within the European Union.

The political and diplomatic landscape of Croatia changed significant after the accession of Croatia into the EU in July 2013. As the 28th member of the club, the EU confirmed that Croatia belongs to the European democratic and cultural set of values which the embassy had readily embraced. Over the last three years, the opportunity to showcase Croatia’s talent and acceptance strengthened the embassy’s public communication and bilateral relations across the board.

The embassy is not only a strong leader for public diplomacy activities, but actively engages with the diaspora both at home and abroad through social media channels and social engagement activities. One of the biggest successes for the embassy was the creation of the British-Croatian Society and the British Croatian Business Club, which has helped to propel interest and knowledge sharing of science, cultural and business sectors between various countries.

The Ambassador has also been very active in showing off Croatian talent in the UK by co-opting local talent for the London Festival of Architecture, London Book Fair, London Design Show, London Design Bienalle 2016, and the British Museum facilitating the inclusion of bronze athlete sculpture Croatian Apoxiomenos for exhibition “Defining beauty: the body in ancient Greek art”. The Ambassador initiated Croatian Studies components at the University of Glasgow. In 2013, Croatian and British dignitaries gathered in the Peak District to celebrate Croatia’s accession to the European Union through the shared tradition of dry stone walling. Ambassador Grdešić added: “It's a symbolic structure of partnership and friendship between our nations that is built to last for hundreds of years.”

In addition to the social engagements, the embassy has been very active in various political events that directly affects the grassroots. In May 2014, the embassy organised donations collection in an effort to help flood victims in Croatia and partnered with Croatia Airlines and other partners to ship the donations free of charge. The embassy has also provided assistance on the Syrian refugee crisis, where the Ambassador spoke to various media agencies on Croatia’s efforts in providing refugees with free shelter, food and travel assistance after Hungary closed its borders. Croatia also offered to provide asylum to refugees and continues to be vigilant on this issue.

Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, Executive Director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: “All too often, we hear stories of our governments not representing our needs but Grassroot Diplomat looks upon selfless individuals in a position of power, who work tirelessly for their communities. The award seeks to create a culture of positive role models within our governments which encourages others like them to follow suit. Grassroot Diplomat winners go beyond their job descriptions and those shortlisted for the award should be proud to be recognised this far.”

The active promotion of Croatian orientation and cultural links has demonstrated the embassy to be an effective facilitator between the people and various establishments, changing the image and brand of the country on a positive trajectory.

Join HE Dr Ivan Grdešić and other government nominees for the gala dinner at The May Fair Hotel, London on Wednesday 20th April, 2016. For ticket information please visit: or call 07511 816689.
