Karen Lumley MP

London, UK – April 20, 2016 – Karen Lumley MP for Redditch County has been shortlisted from over 100 politicians this year for the 4th Annual Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. The award recognises outstanding politicians and diplomats who are representing civilian interests at the highest level in areas of policy, social and business overall. Ms Lumley MP is nominated for her activism in business promotion in Redditch.

Ms Lumley is very active in promoting and supporting the growth of businesses and enterprises within her local constituency. Every three months, Ms Lumley runs a Business Leaders Group where top speakers are invited to offer advice to entrepreneurs on trade. Most Fridays, the MP visits local businesses to understand issues that they may be experiencing without adding pressure for local owners to take time away from their work. Ms Lumley also supports ‘Young Enterprise’ in schools that teaches children the skills of entrepreneurism so that setting up a business can become a reality in their future.

She said: “One of the things I really enjoy about my job is going round visiting some of the many successful businesses that have made their home in Redditch and the surrounding villages.”

During her time as MP, unemployment in Redditch fell down by 64% which is Ms Lumley’s biggest achievements since being elected.

In addition to her business activism, Ms Lumley is a big supporter of the Ronald McDonald House which she claims is one of her favourite charities. Redditch currently has several McDonalds in the area where funds collected go to providing families with a free place to stay with sick children in hospital through the Ronald McDonald House. In support of the charity, Ms Lumley raised £2.5k by doing a bungee jump where local franchise owner Robert Holdcroft, who introduced Ms Lumley to the charity, doubled all donations.

Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, Executive Director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: “All too often, we hear stories of our governments not representing our needs but Grassroot Diplomat looks upon selfless individuals in a position of power, who work tirelessly for their communities. The award seeks to create a culture of positive role models within our governments which encourages others like them to follow suit. Grassroot Diplomat winners go beyond their job descriptions and those shortlisted for the award should be proud to be recognised this far.”

Ms Lumley is also supporting the Teenage Cancer Care Trust, which has a ward in Birmingham, and is working with Ministers to push this campaign forward.
