London, UK – April 20, 2016 – Kate Osamor MP for Edmonton has been shortlisted from over 100 politicians this year for the 4th Annual Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. The award recognises outstanding politicians and diplomats who are representing civilian interests at the highest level in areas of policy, social and business overall. Ms Osamor is nominated for her campaign work on behalf of Yarl’s Wood detention centre.

Ms Osamor is not afraid to utilise her position in the government to call out the faults in the system that hinder progress and development for the people. She has been prominent in speaking out against discrimination against women in the workplace and various walks in society. Her recent visit to Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre has led Ms Osamor to fight for women’s rights and maternal health at the detention centre.

Yarl’s Wood is a detention centre for foreign nationals prior to their deportation from the UK. Ms Osamor visited the detention centre without revealing her identity as an MP and learned that detainees were not offered a time limit on how long they can be held. It is reported that only 9 out of 100 people are deported as a result of the detention’s investigations with no limitation on how long a person can be detained. Sick or pregnant women were given little medical attention with many left unattended owing to lack of legitimacy about their claims of illness. In addition, women are not provided with privacy to use the shower or bathroom particularly when 51% of guards are male. Many of the women detained are victims of trafficking, rape, and sexual assault, who are traumatised by their experiences coming into the UK, yet their hope for a better life has turned to disillusionment in the face the UK’s immigration system.

Ms Osamor is leading debates in Parliament to protect the most vulnerable people from detention, lifting restrictions on access for independent doctors, and end detention of pregnant women and those detained under the Mental Health Act.

Ms Osamor has also worked alongside charities such as RESULTS UK whom she visited Zambia to push for solutions as part of World AIDS Day. As part of her trip, she said, “I firmly believe in solidarity with others fighting for a better life, whether it’s in this country or on the other side of the world. Visiting relatives in Nigeria taught me from a young age that people share the same aspirations, whether they’re struggling local entrepreneurs in London or in Lagos. I’m committed to pushing for the UK to be a force for good in people’s lives wherever they live.”

Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, Executive Director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: “All too often, we hear stories of our governments not representing our needs but Grassroot Diplomat looks upon selfless individuals in a position of power, who work tirelessly for their communities. The award seeks to create a culture of positive role models within our governments which encourages others like them to follow suit. Grassroot Diplomat winners go beyond their job descriptions and those shortlisted for the award should be proud to be recognised this far.”

Ms Osamor is currently the Shadow Junior Minister for Women and Equalities and Parliamentary Private Secretary to Jeremy Corbyn MP.
