Mayor Adedamola Aminu

London, UK – March 5, 2015Mayor of Lambeth Cllr Adedamola Aminu has been shortlisted from over 100 candidates this year for the 3rd Annual Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. The award recognises outstanding politicians and diplomats who are representing civilian interests at the highest level in areas of policy, social and business overall. Cllr Aminu is nominated for his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of young people and minority communities expanding outside the Borough of Lambeth.

A lecturer by profession, the Councillor has shown great commitment to educational initiatives over the course of his career. His commitment goes beyond supporting just Lambeth Borough as he sits on three school governing bodies where he has helped to encourage parents and individuals to join such bodies as a measure to empower them with governance skills while also having a direct impact to their children’s educational needs on a local level.

Cllr Aminu always rises to his community need and makes himself available through attending every local organised event, social and cultural promotion in the society. Despite his busy schedule, Cllr Aminu continues to serve on the board of several local non-organisations that are outside of his borough. This includes his role as the President of the Association of Nigerian Academics which supports international students, being the Trustee for the Tayo Situ Foundation, a local educational organisation named after the late Mayor of Southwark Tayo Situ who died while in office, and serving as Chairman of the Association of the British Nigerian Councillors.

While Mayor, Cllr Aminu is also committed to raising awareness and money for his chosen charities including the Girl Child Network Worldwide which supports girl’s rights, empowerment and education by reaching out to African girls who are economically deprived and subject to physical and cultural risks. The Councillor has so far raised over £4,000 for the charity alone and is committed to surpass this goal by the end of his tenure.

In addition to providing educational support, Cllr Aminu is a great believer of community integration and has provided many hours into providing advice to black Asian minority communities. He has provided out of office assistant to immigration case studies and provided networks to local businesses who are struggling to lift off within the community.  He has also recognised the Latin American population in Lambeth by adding them to the ethnic mix which is often missed out of diversity questionnaires typically used by the local council. This is an important step for integration and making local residents feel a part of the community.

Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, Executive Director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: “All too often, we hear stories of our governments not representing our needs but Grassroot Diplomat looks upon selfless individuals who work tirelessly for their communities. The award seeks to create a culture of positive role models within our governments which encourages others in power to follow suit.”
