London, UK – March 5, 2015 – His Excellency Professor Manuel Hassassian of Palestine has been shortlisted from over 100 candidates this year for the 3rd Annual Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. The award recognises outstanding politicians and diplomats who are representing civilian interests at the highest level in areas of policy, social and business overall. Mr Hassassian is nominated for his immense work on bringing attention and awareness about Palestine.

Mr Hassassian is a diplomat who came from occupation and managed higher education under occupation and has dedicated his career to raising awareness about Palestine to help change its future and discourse.

Since becoming the Palestinian Authority’s diplomatic representative in late 2005, Mr Hassassian has become known as being the voice of Palestine and is considered the top diplomatic of Palestine out of 90 representatives worldwide. Over the years, Mr Hassassian has been featured on 400 major TV interviews, spoke to all the think tanks in Washington DC, visited and spoke at every university in the United Kingdom to raise awareness of Palestine, and actively engages with Palestinian solidarity campaigns as its official representatives. He is visible in grassroots rallies and demonstrations and speaks candidly to British parliamentarians when devising policies and strategies that directly affect his country.

The pinnacle of his contribution was when he represented Palestine at the House of Commons and the House of Lords for the recognition of Palestine, and he continues to organise trips for Parliamentarians and further political and cultural empowerment in generating awareness of his country’s occupation.

In addition to the many demands of his time, Mr Hassassian teaches on Islam, conflict management, and the challenges of modernisation at the University of Maryland. He has also made significant scholarly contributions in the field of political science with the publication of over 100 reviews, articles, and chapters including the Transformation of Palestinian Civil Society, Civil Society and the Concept of Citizenship.

Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, Executive Director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: “All too often, we hear stories of our governments not representing our needs but Grassroot Diplomat looks upon selfless individuals who work tirelessly for their communities. The award seeks to create a culture of positive role models within our governments which encourages others in power to follow suit.”

Mr Hassassian has played an instrumental role on making Palestine politically visible in the United Kingdom and continues to pull influence from the grassroots to ensure peace-building starts with recognition and the concept of acceptance.
