HE Nicola Clase

London, UK – April 20, 2016 – Her Excellency Nicola Clase, Ambassador of Sweden to the Court of St James, has been shortlisted from over 100 government nominations this year for the 4th Annual Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. The award recognises outstanding politicians and diplomats who are representing civilian interests at the highest level in areas of policy, social and business overall. Ms Clase is nominated for her active presence online and social media on behalf of the embassy.

As well as exceptional support of the arts, business and education, the Swedish embassy is known to have one of the best public diplomacy profiles within the UK. The embassy regularly updates its website with detailed and informative analysis on their activities, including a blog written by the Ambassador that clearly links her work to business and the grassroots.

Having a visible online profile is vitally important in creating links with businesses and the diaspora. The website and blog create a platform where the embassy can disseminate thoughts and showcase the embassy’s activities without building barriers. Public diplomacy has become a very important part of modern diplomacy and the use of social media has helped the embassy to build links with people that used to be less accessible to them.

In an effort to promote its overall online presence, the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs asked all its embassies across the world a few years ago to create social media accounts to connect with diaspora groups and receive real-time feedback. An active social media presence and policy have also proven to be an excellent communication tool, not only in day to day affairs but also in times of civil emergencies and natural disasters when the demand for information and guidance from the embassies increase, Links are also provided to other social media and online points of contact with the embassy and ambassador, bringing the embassy closer to the grassroots.

Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, Executive Director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: “All too often, we hear stories of our governments not representing our needs but Grassroot Diplomat looks upon selfless individuals in a position of power, who work tirelessly for their communities. The award seeks to create a culture of positive role models within our governments which encourages others like them to follow suit. Grassroot Diplomat winners go beyond their job descriptions and those shortlisted for the award should be proud to be recognised this far.”

There is no official figure for the amount of Swedes living in the UK, but estimates ranges from 50,000 to just over 100,000, and while the Swedish community is quite independent, the embassy is working hard to maintain a high level of quality of its consular services – for example, the Embassy is the biggest issuer of Swedish passports outside of Sweden, issuing over 7000 per year. The Embassy also works very closely with the Business Sweden, Visit Sweden, the Swedish Church and the Swedish Chamber of Commerce to address any issues that its business partners and communities may be experiencing.

Please join the gala dinner at The May Fair Hotel, London on Wednesday 20th April, 2016. For ticket information please visit: http://www.grassrootdiplomat.org/book-tickets or call 07511 816689.
